Shanghai Expo Pavilion

Shanghai, China

The Danish Pavilion for the Shanghai Expo 2010 showcased essential Danish lifestyle features for the visiting public through the integration of Copenhagen city bikes, the harbor bath, and an ecological picnic into a continuous loop. The spiraling form created a simple yet effective interior-to-exterior route for both the pedestrian and bike paths, as well as the exhibitions housed within. The gradient of openings on the facade was a parametric registration of the building structure’s real-life stress pattern. At the center of the pavilion is a harbor bath filled with seawater from Copenhagen harbor. The Little Mermaid statue, symbol of Copenhagen, was brought to Shanghai and placed in the harbor bath for the duration of the Expo. The city bikes, iconic means of transportation in Denmark, were a celebrated feature at the pavilion and were offered to the visitors for general use.
